“This is a poetry that can accommodate huge distances prairie landscapes, the lush silences of the Atchafalaya swamp, the peculiarly American loneliness of a Midwestern campground by the side of the interstate . . . The pleasure of these poems is that their music both delineates and bridges the distances they evoke.” -- Mark Doty
“There is a solid maturity about these poems that belies the fact that this is a first book. Shepard is, in fact, solidly mature, both in person and in craft. . . His special gift is the expansive narrative of image, a sort of hybrid of true narrative with emotionally crisp, almost lyric snapshots. There is both a pleasing directness and a pleasant musicality about Shepard's work.” -- Booklist
Scavenging the Country for a Heartbeat takes readers on a journey from the Maine coast to the Pacific Northwest, from Vermont to the Florida Keys, from the Louisiana swamps to the plains of Kansas and Nebraska. Guided by his belief that “what is missing/makes memory whole,” Neil Shepard revisits landscapes marred by conflict and compromise. What he discovers is solace and the possibility of transcendence. As a collection these poems detail an emotional evolution – a spiritual transformation – in which progress is measured in “the distances still stretching away.”

SCAVENGING THE COUNTRY FOR A HEARTBEAT Poems eBook Neil Shepard
Neil Shepard's first collection of poems, originally published by Mid-List Press in 1993, enters a new venue in ebook format with Northampton House. Just as with Shepard's print collections, I am transported/involved/intrigued--forgetting my surroundings and entering his precisely-shaped landscapes. Through three sections, Shepard crafts an aesthetic and intimately-voiced account of an American poet's journey from youth to mid-life as he connects with place. I especially marvel at the melding of the exterior elements of the natural world and Shepard's inner world--a symbiotic relationship that only a poet can weave together with a level of attention which verges on the compulsive. Layers of lyric images kept me fixed to the page. Shepard doesn't look away from the painful, the mysterious, the exotic, as well as the earthly--it's all worthy of song: "Whatever is in your heart of contention,/let the crickets sing it into twilight,/and be done with it..." Over the past few years, I've been adding poetry collections to my kindle library because I love the portability of digital format when traveling, reading poems on my smartphone while waiting for appointments or ducking out the backdoor to sit in the yard swing. I encourage you to take Scavenging the Country for a Heartbeat with you wherever you journey.Product details

SCAVENGING THE COUNTRY FOR A HEARTBEAT Poems eBook Neil Shepard Reviews
Ranging from his keen awareness of the natural world, to the distances and transiencies of travel, to the intimacy--fragmented and whole--of the domestic, and reflections on time, Shepard takes you through the inner and outer landscapes of experience. Poetry of memory, loss, arrivals, and departures, Shepard's voice is direct, and his narratives and observations are gripping and compelling. These poems are a delight to read.

I first read these poems over twenty years ago and they helped shape the way I look at the world. It was a joy to connect with the poems again recently. The book as a whole has the immediacy and momentum of a great first-person novel, and each poem explores life with soul, wisdom, humor, and humanity.
